As one of Poland’s most prestigious public higher education institutions, Gdynia Maritime University has been educating world-class mariners, engineers, and industry professionals for over a century, blending rich traditions with modern academic standards.
The foundation of Gdynia Maritime University dates back to 1920 in Tczew, where it was established as the Maritime School featuring the faculties of Navigation and Mechanics. In 1930, aligning with the development of the region, the school relocated to Gdynia into a newly constructed, state-of-the-art campus on Morska Street, officially becoming the State Maritime School. Even during the hardships of World War II, the institution continued its operations abroad, maintaining its educational mission in Southampton and London, England.
Practical, hands-on training is at the core of Gdynia Maritime University's identity. The school’s maritime legacy began in 1921 when the flag was first raised on the legendary STS Lwów. As technology advanced, the famous STS Dar Pomorza took over in 1930, followed later by the world-renowned STS Dar Młodzieży, which still serves as the university's flagship training vessel today. These ships provide students with invaluable real-world experience on the open seas.
Constantly expanding its academic horizons, the institution achieved academy status in 2001, adopting the name Gdynia Maritime Academy.
Historically, the academy maintained a strong military tradition. Until 2009, students underwent compulsory military training, took the military oath, and held the title of cadet while earning lower military ranks. This training culminated in an officer's exam. Today, this military curriculum has been replaced with a fully civil, modern academic approach. Ultimately, following a regulation by the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation on July 2, 2018, the academy was officially granted its current, highly prestigious title: Gdynia Maritime University.
