The 6-year MD (Medicine) program at the Medical University of Łódź is designed for high school and secondary school graduates who wish to study Medicine in English in Poland. The Medical University of Łódź is the largest medical university in Poland and has been educating future doctors since 1945. It combines long-standing teaching traditions with innovative teaching methods, offering students comprehensive knowledge, necessary skills, and strong clinical preparation.
The program is intended for students who are passionate about biology, chemistry, physics, and medicine; who want to gain the qualifications required to practice as doctors; and who are disciplined, responsible, and ready for continuous learning. It prepares students for the demanding responsibilities of the medical profession.
The program lasts 6 years (12 semesters) and is delivered within a unified master’s degree system. The curriculum complies with legal requirements and is adapted to the challenges of 21st-century medicine. During the first three years, students focus mainly on preclinical subjects, including anatomy, medical chemistry, biology with genetics and ecology, biophysics, physiology, histology, pathomorphology, and pharmacology. During the final three years, students study clinical subjects such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry, gynecology and obstetrics, dermatology, and infectious diseases.
The curriculum also includes IT and biostatistical preparation, as well as social sciences and humanities subjects such as medical ethics, history of philosophy, sociology, and history of medicine, together with physical education and the study of congress languages. Particular emphasis is placed on developing proper professional attitudes, patient communication skills, and an understanding of psychosocial factors affecting health.
In recent years, thanks to the “Operation Integration” program, the e-learning offer has been significantly expanded, allowing students asynchronous access to all lectures. The structure and content of clinical classes have also been redesigned so that students learn proper clinical reasoning, from symptoms through diagnostics to diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Related subjects have been integrated into coherent modules taught and examined together.
The aim of the program is to prepare graduates to practice as doctors by teaching the basic theories and principles of medical practice, communication skills, patient cooperation, and leadership abilities in healthcare. Graduates are expected to possess strong clinical preparation, problem-solving skills, an ethical attitude toward patients, willingness to continue education, teamwork ability, and proper professional attitudes.
Clinical skills of graduates include taking medical history, conducting appropriate examinations, interpreting results, making preliminary clinical diagnoses, carrying out proper diagnostic procedures, recognizing life-threatening conditions, performing medical interventions to maintain basic life functions, and assessing health problems in physical, social, psychological, and cultural contexts.
Graduates of the 6MD program may find employment in public and private healthcare institutions, especially clinics and hospitals, as well as in research institutions, research and development centers, emergency medical services, educational and counseling institutions in health promotion, and academic medical units. They may also pursue careers in healthcare management, establish their own medical practices, complete postgraduate internships, take the Final Medical Exam, and continue toward specialization, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies, or further professional training.
