The Institute of English Studies at Warsaw University offers two undergraduate programs: English Studies - Linguistics and English Studies - Literature and Culture. The English Studies - Linguistics program is a multidisciplinary program that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the English language and its uses. The program offers a broad range of subjects, including linguistics, literature, history, and culture of the Anglophone countries. During the first year of the program, students gain an overview of the subjects within the domain of English Studies, including linguistics. They learn about the relationship between language and the human brain, diversity of language varieties, the role of language in artificial intelligence systems, communication in traditional and modern media, language change, or translation of texts of many kinds.
In the second semester of their first year, students choose whether to continue with the English Studies - Linguistics or English Studies - Literature and Culture program for the next two years of study. Admission to either program is based solely on the student's grade-point average (GPA) from the first semester. The program is interdisciplinary, drawing on the experience of sociology, pedagogy, psychology, communication studies, and other branches of research. Students have the opportunity to take courses in literature, culture, and social studies as their minor, depending on their interests.
The English language is the exclusive language of instruction in the program, allowing students to considerably develop their language competence. The program also gives students the opportunity to additionally take part in teacher training and take the courses necessary to obtain qualifications to teach English as a foreign language at all levels.
Both the English Studies - Linguistics and English Studies - Literature and Culture programs are full-time and free from tuition fees. The Institute of English Studies is located in the modern building of the Faculty of Modern Languages at 55 Dobra street, Warsaw.
